International Shipping Information
Practical answers to questions businesses ask most often when planning international freight and imports or exports involving Uganda.
What is freight forwarding?
Freight forwarding is the coordination of cargo movement between an origin and a destination. A freight forwarder arranges transport, documentation, customs clearance and delivery on behalf of the client.
Air freight vs ocean freight
Air freight is faster and suited to time-sensitive or high-value cargo, while ocean freight is more cost-effective for large or heavy shipments where transit time is less critical.
How long does air freight take?
Air freight typically takes 3-7 days depending on the route, airline schedules and customs processing at origin and destination.
How long does ocean freight take?
Ocean freight usually takes 20-45 days depending on the route, port congestion and inland transport time after arrival.
Documents for importing into Uganda
Common documents include a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin, import declaration and any relevant permits.
What affects shipping costs?
Costs depend on cargo weight and volume, shipping method, route, fuel surcharges, customs duties and any special handling such as cold chain or dangerous goods.
What is cargo consolidation?
Cargo consolidation combines shipments from multiple suppliers into a single consignment, reducing shipping costs and simplifying customs clearance.
How does customs clearance work?
Customs clearance involves submitting the required documentation, paying applicable duties and taxes, and obtaining release of the cargo from customs authorities.
